The Bowser Family - Lehigh Valley Photographer

I have to say, I LOVE photography!  It has my heart and is my passion. The ability to create beautiful lasting images, watching the look on my clients' faces when they see that special moment I captured and telling someones story through my lens is such a rewarding feeling!

But like every other woman out there, I can't contain my love to just one thing... I must say with a heavy heart, that my sometimes I cheat on photography... the other half of my heart lye's with business planning and accounting and helping other people understand how the to apply it all to their personal business.

When I started learning about photography, I dove into all the learning tools that I could find.  I wanted to understand camera functions, lighting, composition, client interaction and everything there is to know about being a photographer.  But what I realized while I was sifting through all the amazing information out there, was that there was not a lot of things to help you learn how to run a smooth, successful business and really understand your bookkeeping, profits and bottom-line!

Then I joined this facebook group of amazing woman. They are all photographers in my area, all learning and growing from each other and all being a great support system!  They would post questions about sales tax, taxes and other business questions and the confusion from everyone would start.  So I had an idea...I should hold a class!!  I have a degree in both accounting and paralegal studies.  I am a cost accountant when I am not being a photographer.  Before that I was an Sales and Use tax auditor for the State of Pa, so why not share what I know to people that could truly use it to help them grow their business!

I have always seen two different paths in my life.... the ambitious managerial accountant with her MBA help businesses plan for a super successful future...AND the artistic photographer who can live a satisfying, filling life capture beautiful moments for people to keep forever.  I never once thought that I could merge my two loves together! And this past Sunday, I did!  I taught some wonderful photographers in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, how to understand their expenses, calculate their profit margins, understand sales and use tax and so much more!! I am so grateful for the opportunity to teach everyone and can't wait to do more of this in the future.  I truly feel blessed.

Bun in the Oven

Every soon-to-be mom wants to have the best photos to remember the wonderful time that pregnancy can be.  This mommy wanted just that!  With her love for the classic vintage look and her light fun attitude, we were able to put together the perfect session!!

The first part is all about getting ready.  Isn't she beautiful and glowing in these images!

After our mom got ready for the day, she was ready to start showing off her Bun in the Oven.  What better way to cook up a new baby girl than to mix the perfect ingredients.  All you need to do is find the perfect recipe on "How to Grow a Baby Girl" and than combined a little bit of love, stir it up, and give it some warmth...

Getting ready for your Boudoir Shoot

The second part of our Boudoir information blog goes into detail how to get ready for your shoot!! A boudoir shoot can be intimidating to even the most confident woman!  At JWP we want to make sure that we do everything and help you do everything we can to make sure it is a perfect photo shoot for you!! Here is how you can ensure a PERFECT shoot!!

PREPARING FOR YOUR SESSION!

Helpful Tips!

We want you to feel and look your best the day of the photo shoot. So here are a few helpful tips to help you prepare for your session:

1. Take care of any waxing/shaving in the sensitive areas (such as bikini line) at least the 2-3 day before to avoid irritation and redness.

2. We encourage at least make-up and false lashes being done by a professional. The transformation will make you feel more confident and glamorous. Hair can range from big and messy to retro glam. It’s your session… make it you!

3. We recommend a Manicure and Pedicure for your session, they will show up in close ups!

4. Come to your session ready. Clothing and accessories, heels etc…Hair done and make-up on if you have not purchased our make-up session add-on.  We don’t want you to waste your session time getting ready. However, an occasional touch-up is okay.

5. Make sure you drink plenty of water 24 hrs before to avoid dehydration and looking tired.

6. Do NOT drink alcohol the night before and make sure you get plenty of rest the night before. No puffy or dark circles under the eyes.

7. Wear loose clothing before the shoot to prevent marks on the skin.  Try to avoid wearing socks and a bra to your photo session to avoid the marks these items can leave on your skin.

8. Practice, practice, practice….yes, in front of the mirrorYou can also flip through a Victoria Secret catalogs to study poses. Bring your favorite pages with you to show us what you like the most.

9. Please no spray tanning prior to your session as it can leave you looking orange especially on your hands and feet.  If you would like to get a little “color” prior to your session, we recommend a couple of sessions in a tanning bed… but, do NOT over do it.

What to Bring Checklist

To help to you get ready for your photoshoot we have put together a list of items you should not forget!

Valentines Day Mini Boudoir Q & A

At the end of this month Jessica Watson Photography is hosting a 2-day mini boudoir session! I am so excited for this and am booking up fast!!

Boudoir is one of the fastest upcoming "glamour shoots" for woman and is a wonderful opportunity for women to embrace themselves by finding their confidence and sexiness that every woman has deep down inside!  However, there are so many woman who do not know what boudoir is.  So here is a little Q& A for everyone to help!

First thing first- how do I actually pronounce the word?!?

Boudoir – pronounced  bŏo dwăawr comes from late 18th century French word and is translated as – a woman’s bedroom or a private sitting room.  Boudoir photography, therefore, usually takes place in a setting such as a bedroom or a hotel room… an intimate setting to create classy images that can be soft, romantic, sexy, sensual, or naughty. The main focus of a boudoir photographer is to capture you in the most flattering way by guiding you through the poses that compliment your body type. 

Who should go for boudoir photography?

1. A woman that wants to surprise that special one in her life with a unique and personal gift…. There’s something about seeing him open that photo album for the first time and drool all over your sexy photos (and not the ones from Maxim magazine)!

2. A woman that needs a confidence boost. O yes, we all occasionally get really tired of looking at these glossy magazines with “perfect” models on every page. Well, now it can be you looking back from a sexy picture. Why should only models have all the fun in front of the camera?  Boudoir photography will help you discover that secret seductress in you.

3. A woman that is already confident and just wants to strut her sexy stuff in front of the camera and have some fun! Why not just make it all about you and give yourself a gift? It’ll be your little secret (ssshhhh, we wont tell anyone).

Will My Images Be Touched Up?

My session is booked – how do I prepare?

In preparation for your shoot, please think of the following things:
Hair touch-ups, waxing, eyebrow shaping, manicure, pedicure, tanning and moisturizing.

I’m a little uncomfortable about nudity!

No worries, JWP does not shoot full nudity.  Besides, sexy isn’t always about how much you show, it’s all about how you show it!  Most men feel that leaving something to the imagination is much sexier than baring it all.

A Girl and Her Bike

There's not much more perfect looking things than a girl and her bike! I couldn't be happier about how this photo shoot came out!  Melissa was an absolutely amazing model and was so fun to work with!  In the beginning of her shoot she was a bit nervous, but once we rolled out her Honda Rebel she was completely comfortable. It shows in her photos!!! Glamour shots are so fun and one of my favorite types of shots to do!

Love on the Farm

There is a little farm in Hellertown, that is a definite hidden treasure of the valley.  A secluded B&B that is absolutely beautiful!  It's called Larken Farms....you can check out their facebook here or their website here.  This was the perfect place to capture the love between these two people.  They were on vacation and wanted a few photos to remember it.  I couldn't have asked for a better couple or location to shoot at!!  If anyone is looking for a romantic getaway close to home or an intimate event...I highly recommend this beautiful place!!

I can't get over how beautiful this couple was and the farm was just the right added touch of magic, all tucked away in Hellertown, Pa!

OH MY!!! It's been so long!!!

I have been away for awhile, but now I'm back and so excited to fill you in on what has been happening in the couple of months.  I have had so many great sessions this Holiday Season I want to share them with you! :) So the next few blogs will be dedicated to specific sessions! When life gets you down

Squeeze lemons and make lemonade!! Isn't that the saying? Well I am going to go with that and say, that is so very true.

Things happen all the time that get us down and make us feel sorry, sad, bad or any of those negative adjectives about ourselves. But you just can't let it happen because right around the corner from those negative action...is a positive reaction! (I made a science joke there!!)

Take for instance last month...I had no inspiration at all to focus on my photography. I still brought my camera every where I went, I would even pull it out sometimes, but nothing at all seemed inspirational enough to take. That is the beauty of art...unless you feel it, you can't make it. With all the negative things that were going on around me...how could I feel inspired?

Then it happened! My positive reaction!! In one day, we went from loosing our house (my landlord sold it while we are still living in it) loosing the boyfriends shop (problems again with a landlord...are you seeing a pattern here) and just being plain ol' down in the dumps...TO having a new house that is so dirty and dingy and needs so much work and I am absolutely going to love every minute of fixing it up AND the boyfriend finding a new shop right down the street from our new house!! What luck is that!!

Now my inspiration is back! I will have an office/library area in my new house, which means more motivation to bring you amazing beautiful pictures! I couldn't be more excited!

To start off this new inspirational weekend...I have a mini session on Saturday at beautiful Jacobsburg Park with some amazing families! And an contest that is so near and dear to my heart!

In my belief that every family should be able to hang their precious moments in time up for everyone to see, I am doing a contest where someone can nominate themselves or a family for a $100.00 gift certificate! Wanna be model gorgeous with Photoshop??? Its soooo easy peasy...

Have you ever looked at pictures of models in magazines and thought, how do they have such perfect skin?? A lot of people will just say, ohhh it's because they're airbrushed. Welllllll....that is only partially true. Sure they have make-up on, and thanks to a recent boudoir shoot thanks to Danielle Miller Photography that I personally particiapated in (not as the phtoographer, ohhh it was soooo crazy, but she is ABSOLUTELY awesome!!!) I learned that you can be actually airbrushed, using a real airbrush gun to look beautiful!!

BUTTTT that only goes so far...so here is my take on the basics of how I get that model gorgeous skin  look in images while keeping the everyday person look in your model!! It also helps that all my models are GORGEOUS! ;-)

I am currently using Photoshop Elements 11, but this basic concept should work in any Photoshop program.

First, open up your image in Photoshop. I always shoot in RAW so that way I can make the little tweaks that I need to make before my picture opens in Photoshop. This is done by changing the settings in your camera before you shoot. My image starts off like this....

So you can see, my model is gorgeous and doesn't need to much work at all, but if you want that smooth, baby soft skin that you see in magazines, then there are a couple of steps that you need to take. 

The first thing that I do is cover up any blemishes that you may see. To do this, first make a copy of your background layer by pressing "CTRL J". Thank you take your cloning stamp (it looks like a small stamp in elements)

After clicking on this stamp, find a place next to the blemish that is the smooth texture that you are trying to create. Hold down ALT and click on that spot. Then move your cloning brush over your blemish and left click your mouse and WAALLAAAHH, your blemish is gone! Make sure you check your brush size and opacity as well to get the look your look to achieve.

After all your blemishes are covered up, then go to Layers>New Fill Layer> Solid Color. A box will pop up that you can choose a color to lay over the whole picture. We are looking to achieve a soft skin color so I always try for a very light, almost white soft pink color. A good way to choose a color is to look at skin on chest and hands, That is usually the lightest softest color on a person. (Notice the color on your left! That is my take on a soft skin color, but fill free to play with different colors depending on your subject!)

Now we obviously need to get rid of the intense amount of color that is covering up our image. To do that I first change the Blending Option to either Overlay or Soft Light. Those are my two favorite looks to try out. After that, I make a layer mask by clicking on the image I am working on in my Layers Panel and making sure it is highlighted. Then click on the Masking Icon that looks like this > .

A mask allows you to cover up things that you don't want seen in the action or layer that you are working on. So if you add the fill color to the entire photo, add a mask, then click on "CTRL I" to make the entire mask black, you will notice that it looks like the mask isn't even their anymore. Now we can add the soft color just where we want it.

So, click on the paint brush, make sure that your color choice is on white (like your erasing the black from the mask) check your opacity and your brush. (Mine is feathered at a size of 59 pixels and opacity is set at 52%). With this opacity you can do the contouring of the face. I usually use this for the main part of the cheeks and forehead and also the bottom of the chin and line on the nose. 

After you have the majority of the face done, I lower the Opacity to around 28% and fill in the rest of the face and neck. After the face and neck are done then I would go over to my Opacity setting on the Layers Panel, next to my Blending Options, make sure that the layer mask is clicked and change the Opacity to about 27%. That way it doesn't look like a color on top of the skin, rather just a color of the skin. 

Next, you would want to add depth and color to the face. For this I use the same concept. Layer>New Fill Layer> Solid Color> and then for lips, I choose a red color, and for cheeks a pink color, and for contour a bronzer type color. The best way to think of this is like your putting on make-up for girls, or painting a picture! Play with your Blending Options and Opacity to get the look your trying to achieve. If you add multiple colors for cheek contour, make sure you choose your smudging tool at a very low strength and blend these colors on to the face. 

After you are done putting all the colors onto your face, then your can start that baby soft look that everyone loves! To do this, flatten your image by clicking "CTRL Shift E", this will blend all your layers into one. Then make a copy of the the new background layer by again clicking "CTRL J". 

When you have your new layer, go to FILTER>Blur>Surface Blur. (Some people use Gaussian Blur as well, which can work, I like the harder edges from the Surface Blur.) Make sure your Radius is never higher then your Threshold, but use a blur that looks soft and natural. I used Radius of 9 and Threshold of 15 here. Add a Layer Mask, Invert the Mask from black to white (CTRL I) click your paint brush, adjust your brush opacity and start painting on smooth skin. Adjust your opacity for the correct parts of the face, then I usually adjust the opacity in the Layers Panel to get the look that I really want. 

After that is done, I flatten my layers, "CTRL SHIFT E" add a new layer, go to Enhance>Adjust Sharpness>focus on the eyes ONLY until you think they look sharp, click OK>add layer mask>Invert> open up the eyes> adjust opacity so your subject doesn't look like an alien and then flatten. 

Add whatever final touches or Actions you want to use to make your photo gorgeous and just like I said...EASY PEASY...your done!! :) 5 steps and you have model gorgeous, soft skin, magazine ready

Sometimes you just have to stop and....

take some pictures!

It's Monday, and its rainy and dreary and there is nothing appealing about it at all. My morning has been full of cleaning, editing, and resizing for print.

 Little word of advice...when you edit pictures in Photoshop, do not automatically recrop. Recrop when you are ready to size for prints. I researched my little but off and found on a Clickin Moms forum out that 11x15 (which has a 15in width and an 11in height has the best ratio for printing!! See you learn something new everyday! :)

The problem was that I cropped during my initial edit for my customer. And when they told me they wanted to purchase the digital downloads, (which is an awesome invention...you purchase, then pay, and they instantly download right to your computer!!) I realized that I would need to put them at a size that would be good for any kind of print they wanted! So, that is where the 11x15 came in. The problem was, when you set restrictions to that size (remember to set it at 300 ppi and to sharpen it a bit the picture was cropped in such an odd way, it didn't fit in the picture! This was what I got out that that...boy was I ready to give up! (It's been a stressful week!)

So here I am, on this dreary rainy Monday, re-editing all my pictures ready to pull out my hair! So to relax, recoup, and calm down a bit...I'm just gonna stop for a minute....

All the Moments of May! A month of photos!

Wow, I can't believe how many wonderful amazing people I had the privilege of photographing this month. So many that I haven't even had a chance to tell you about them all individually!! SOOOO I have a treat for you...a plethora of pictures for you to admire of wonderful babies, toddles, kids and families! This just shows why I LLOOOVVEEE what I do! <3

 

Here come the ooohhhss and ahhhhs! 

This is baby Landon with his Dad 11 days after he was born! We were trying to get just lil Landon, but he wasn't feeling very photogenic at all. So Daddy came over trying to soothe him with that special magic touch only daddy's have with their baby boys! I was able to capture this precious little moment without them even knowing it!

Oh what a sweet little girl to want to share her birthday cake! I can't get enough of this picture...it was so wonderful to be able to capture her 1st birthday party and share all these special moments with everyone. As I was taking her picture during her cake smashing moment, she offered me a piece of cake! I must have looked hungry. Best little girl that I ever got the pleasure of sharing some cake with <3 (Did I mention she's my niece as well!! I'm biased!)

He loves me, He loves me not.... There isn't any other caption for this picture that fits it any better. This wonderful little one year old was captured in this sweet loving moment. Maybe even at 1, she is thinking of her prince charming. How did I get so lucky to be able shoot such beautiful, sweet moments!

I can't even tell you how perfect this setting was for this gorgeous mommy and her one year old lil man! We walked around the park for hours trying to get the right shot and although we were able to capture some beautiful moments of these two, it lacked the personality that they needed! So we drove around, looked at different buildings and in different areas and we came across this old building in a little alley. It turned out to be one of my favorite pictures I have ever taken! They are wonderful and I  loved being able to spend the morning with the two of them. 

The bond between a boy and his dog can never be broken! This little man was happily playing with me in his back yard, while I was able to capture all the fun times! No matter where we playing, however, his protector was standing by, making sure nothing bad was going on. Brutus the Bulldog was the perfect addition to this loving little man's photo shoot! It definitely shows the closeness and love that every boy feels for their pet at any age! Ohhhh moments like this make my heart melt! <3

And finally, I had a photo shoot (or more of a play date) with this wonderful little girl! Mom and Dad were so excited to capture some moments with her because they haven't had family photos in so long. I felt so honored that I was allowed to give them what every family should leave, beautiful pictures of their babies!! This lil ball of energy was so much fun! Her shyness only lasted for 3 minutes and then she was loving every second of being in front of the camera! I hope every photo shoot is as awesome as this one was!!

So there you go...all my moments in May that I had the opportunity and privilege of being able to capture!I hope you enjoyed them! I can't wait for many more moments like this to come in the future!! :-)

Addiction to photography!

It's like a serious addiction!! And I can't, I wont, and I don't want to stop it!! All I want to do is take pictures, and when I'm not taking pictures, I want to edit pictures. AND when I'm not editing or taking pictures I want to talk about editing and taking pictures. Yup, I have a serious addiction and there is no cure for it, EXCEPT to let me take your picture!! ;-)

You see, I figured out the other day how bad it was. Now some of you know I am in school for an accounting degree so that I can go work a "big girl job" as I like to call it. On Tuesday this week, I had an interview with the Bureau of Audits, Depart of Revenue... sounds so official....for a paid internship position. Now, before photography came into my life, this was a dream position. Then I met my camera!! And ohh what a beautiful camera it is!!! :-)

During the whole interview, I kept thinking about going home and editing shots from my 1 year old session a couple of days before. I was thinking what other looks I should try out and give the mommy!! My mind kept wandering and I had to continue to remind myself to pay attention with this man that could hold my "big girl fate" in his future!!

The funny thing is, I found out, because I can't stop talking about it, that he is into photography!!! Film, he didn't care too much for digital. But HOW COOL IS THAT!!! It's my two passions for life wrapped into one...photography and numbers!! Wow I'm a nerd!

So we talked about Ansel Adams (he had a photo of his on his wall) and we talked about Iphoneography (yes this really is a form of portraiture, strange, I know. Apple is taking over the world) An hour and half later, I walked out of his office confident that my addiction for photography helped me get this job. I'm still waiting to hear back, they said a couple weeks, so I'll let you know what happens!!

My new found love (or obsession as some might call it!) has finally taken its own form and started a photography business. I want you to follow along and learn as I learn! I want to laugh, cry, joke, be amazed and share a fortitude of emotions with you through photography!

I am still learning my craft, I probably always will be, but as I learn, I want you to learn too!! So look here for some tips on how to handle your camera, if I find deals I'll hook you up, and when I have photo shoots, you can ohh and ahh over all the wonderful people too!

Oh and here is your first photo to ohh and ahh from! I had the privilege of shooting this wonderful little girls one year old moment! Her mom went inside to get a sheet for the cake smash we were about to do and I just started shooting away. I am in LOOOVVEEE with this shot!! (btw, cake smash shots coming later...yay!!!)
